At least 40% of all fatal road crashes are the result of skidding. Studies show that ESP® could reduce skidding crashes by up to 80%.
ESP® works by using a number of intelligent sensors that detect loss of control. 25 times per second ESP® checks the driver's steering intention against the actual vehicle direction. When these are not in sync, and the car is starting to slide out of control, ESP® intervenes. It reduces engine power in order to restore the vehicle's stability. If this intervention is insufficient, it additionally applies braking power to individual wheels. The resulting turning movement of the vehicle counteracts the skidding movement. Within physical limits, the car thus remains safely on track.
Is ESP® different from the Antilock Braking System (ABS) and the Traction Control System (TCS)?
ESP® incorporates all the components of ABS and TCS, with the additional benefits of stability control. By preventing the wheels from locking-up, ABS keeps the vehicle steerable when you need to brake strongly. TCS prevents the wheels from slipping when you are accelerating and ensures optimal traction. While ABS and TCS work in the driving (longitudinal) direction, ESP® helps you to cope with sideways (lateral) movements which lead to skidding.
Are there different names for ESP®?
Yes. ESP® is available under different names: it can be called DSC (Dynamic Stability Control), VSA (Vehicle Stability Assist) or VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) for example.
Do I need to activate ESP® when starting the engine?
No. ESP® is always on and active once you start the engine. Some manufacturers equip their vehicles with an ESP® switch. When pressing this switch you normally deactivate TCS. You will notice this by a warning lamp appearing in your dashboard. The deactivation of TCS is sometimes useful when you find yourself in a driving situation where you want the wheels to slip e.g. snow.
Can I have ESP® retrofitted in my car?
No. ESP® cannot be retrofitted. Therefore make sure you make the right decision from the start when buying your next car. Choose one with ESP® on board.
Do I have to change my driving behavior when I drive a car with ESP®?
No. ESP® supports the driving in critical skidding situations. It does not require any change in driving styles. You should always drive attentively and carefully.
In Europe, ESP® is mainly available as standard equipment in the premium and medium car segment. In small cars it is mostly offered as an option or not available at all. Next time you are buying a car think about ESP®. Ask your dealer for a model that is ESP® equipped.
