The "ASV" initiative

The "ASV" initiative

The Japanese government started the ASV initiative in 1991. The main goal of ASV is the development and choice of vehicle safety measures with an expected benefit. It aims primarily at building a crash free society. The project is currently in its 4th phase (2006-2010) and the goal until 2012 is to reduce the number of road deaths to 5,000 per year.

ASV wants to support warning the driver of dangerous situations and the prevention of crashes. In doing this, it not only wants to increase the driver’s self-awareness but also to integrate external technologies to make driving safer.

The development and promotion of new technologies for the realization of these goals will be in cooperation between the MLIT, automobile OEM’s, universities and other associations. Some of the important ASV technologies are ABS, ESP®, Lane Keeping Assistant or Automatic Emergency Brake. ESP® is an enabler for further technologies like the Automatic Emergency Brake.
